What is European Oak and why we use it for external doors
The ‘genus Quercus’ (Latin for oak tree) with more than two hundred separate species produces the true oaks. Most of these are found in the northern hemisphere, where in temperate regions they may form pure stands, or may be dominant species in mixed woodlands. While in warmer countries they tend to occupy the mountainous areas. Most of the true oaks are trees but some are shrubs. The trees, on the basis of wood structure, fall into three groups; the red oaks, the white oaks, and the evergreen oaks or live oaks; the red and white oaks are deciduous.
Historically a traditional boat building material, European oak has been used for thousands of years. It’s often used to make staircases, doors, cabinets, skirting boards, ceiling beams and other items which need to be tough and hard-wearing. Our bespoke front doors made from oak will last a lifetime.
Why European Oak front doors?
European oak is a hardwood that naturally insulates any property and acts as an ideal companion to any front door entrance. It is versatile, durable, attractive, and it resists rotting and decay incredibly well.Oak blends in to the surroundings providing you with a classic, traditional appearance that is reminiscent of the countryside and english heritage and looks much more pleasing, particularly in listed buildings and rural areas. Bespoke front doors are made to last using 100% solid European Oak, no veneers or engineered components, each door is bespoke and can be made to any size.SWD’s Heritage Solid Oak doors are produced using only the finest grade European Oak combined with traditional joinery methods.
